Prioritizing Comparative Effectiveness Research Questions for Systems Interventions to Improve the Management of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Stakeholder Workshop
PCORI hosted a multi-stakeholder workshop to discuss whether comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) can help to answer questions systems interventions to improve the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain. We asked representatives of a wide range of stakeholder groups, including patients, caregivers, clinicians, industry, payers, and researchers to participate in this discussion.
Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a musculoskeletal pain condition with no identifiable underlying disorder that has not resolved within three to six months. Pain associated with this condition is often influenced not only by biomedical factors but also psychological and social factors and multiple providers (behavioral, physical therapy, pharmacy) are commonly involved in its treatment. Chronic pain management is often fragmented leading to poor outcomes and inappropriate and redundant use of healthcare resources.
This workgroup focused on identifying priority research questions that address systems interventions to improve the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, including efforts targeted at improving its management by the primary care physicians and those related to referral to and the organization of interdisciplinary pain programs.
In-person attendance was by invitation only, but the public was welcome to listen in via teleconference/webinar.
