Telemedicine’s ‘Big Day’POLITICO, November 2, 2018
This article was one of several that noted presentations at PCORI’s 2018 Annual Meeting. POLITICO focused on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ new policies on telehealth, released the same day as a PCORI Annual Meeting session on telehealth. The report included comments from the American Medical Association’s Sylvia Trujillo, MPP, JD, who spoke at the meeting. It also highlighted results from two PCORI-funded studies on telehealth; one on the treatment of psoriasis and another on mobile-based therapy for people with serious mental illness.

Obesity Increases Risk of Asthma in Children, Nemours Study ShowsOrlando Sentinel, November 26, 2018
This article was among several that reported on a Nemours Children’s Health System study that found a link between obesity in childhood and asthma risk. The study analyzed deidentified data more than 500,000 children’s medical records made available through PEDSnet, a PCORnet member network. As noted in Pediatrics, researchers found obesity to be a major risk factor for asthma in children.

Educating Inpatients on VTE Boosts Prophylaxis ComplianceMedPage Today, November 16, 2018
This article highlights a PCORI-funded study designed to test the effectiveness of educating hospitalized patients at risk for blood clots about the risks of missing doses of blood-thinning drugs. As detailed in JAMA Network Open, researchers found that providing patients with an educational conversation, video, or handout can reduce the rates of missed doses.

Gastric Bypass Is the Most Effective Weight Loss SurgeryKnowridge Science Report, November 19, 2018
Another article features a project that used PCORnet data to study weight-loss surgeries. It examined the outcomes and side effects of the three most common types of weight-loss surgeries on adults with severe obesity. Researchers found that gastric bypass surgery led to greater initial and sustained weight loss compared to adjustable gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy. The team details the findings in Annals of Internal Medicine.
