Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute's Work to Be Highlighted at AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting

PCORI Leadership Will Share Vision, Goals at Gathering of Health Services Researchers

Washington, D.C. – The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) will highlight its ongoing work and share its long-term goals during AcademyHealth’s Annual Research Meeting in Orlando, Fla., June 24-26. PCORI staff and members of its Board of Governors and Methodology Committee will participate in several sessions throughout the event, which convenes the nation’s leading health services researchers.

Three members of PCORI’s leadership team will be featured at the meeting’s opening plenary session on June 24, from 12:45-2:15 p.m. The session, “Impact of Comparative Effectiveness Research on the Field of HSR,” will include PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH, and Board of Governors members Carolyn Clancy, MD, Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Arnold Epstein, MD, Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health.

PCORI’s mission, priorities and funding opportunities will be the subject of a June 25 panel discussion, “Doing Research Differently,” from 8:00-9:30 a.m. Speakers include Dr. Selby; PCORI Chief Operating Officer Anne Beal, MD, MPH; Director of Engagement Research Lori Frank, PhD; Methodology Committee member Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN; and PCORI Pilot Projects award recipient Dominick Frosch, PhD, of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Later that morning, from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m., members of PCORI’s Methodology Committee will discuss the group’s proposed standards and its implications for the future of patient-centered research. Speakers include Dr. Newhouse, of the University of Maryland School of Nursing; David Meltzer, MD, PhD, of the University of Chicago; and Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Other sessions featuring PCORI staff include:

  • A National Library of Medicine Town Hall meeting on June 24, from 9:00-10:00 a.m., which will include PCORI’s Director of Communications, Bill Silberg, in a panel discussion on “Grey Literature and HSR-Translation, Dissemination, and Retention in a PCOR World.”
  • A career development session on June 26, from 9:45-11:15 a.m., “Building a Successful Career in Non-University Settings.” Dr. Beal will be among the panelists.
