PCORI Adopts Definition of Patient-Centered Outcomes Research
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Board of Governors of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) adopted a revised working definition of ‘patient-centered outcomes research’ at its March 5 public meeting in Baltimore, Md.
A working group of PCORI Methodology Committee and Board members had edited a draft definition in response to feedback received through a public comment period and focus groups of patients and caregivers. The full Board considered the proposed revised definition in public session and approved it.
“Defining patient-centered outcomes research provides guidance for our organization, patients and stakeholders about the unique research we will fund,” said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH. “This is a living definition and we will revisit it in the future, as needed, as this field of research grows and the needs of patients and those who care for them evolve.”
The Board meeting also included updates on:
- The process and timeline for making funding decisions for PCORI’s Pilot Projects Grants Program;
- Next steps for revising PCORI’s draft National Priorities for Research and initial Research Agenda;
- Next steps for developing PCORI’s Funding Announcements that will follow adoption of the initial Research Agenda
- PCORI’s 2012 plans for engaging patients and stakeholders;
- Plans for finalizing PCORI’s first Methodology Report;
- Appointments to PCORI’s Standing Committee on Conflicts of Interest; and
- PCORI’s 2011 audit.
