PCORI announces newest members of multi-stakeholder advisory panels

WASHINGTON, DC — The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) today announced the selection of 23 people representing sectors from across the healthcare community to serve on PCORI’s five multi-stakeholder advisory panels.

PCORI’s Board of Governors approved the proposed slate of panelists during its August 20 meeting. Nominees, chosen from more than 200 candidates who either nominated themselves or were nominated by third parties, had until today to accept. The Board also approved the nomination of five current panelists to serve as either chair or co-chair of their respective advisory groups.

PCORI’s advisory panels provide guidance and recommendations to the Board, PCORI’s Methodology Committee and staff on planning, developing, implementing and enhancing PCORI’s work to develop a portfolio of patient‐centered comparative clinical effectiveness research. Each panel has 10 to 24 members, each appointed to serve terms ranging from one to three years. They bring a range of perspectives to their work with PCORI, given their diverse experience as representatives of the research, patient, caregiver, clinician, insurance, industry, health system and policy communities.

“The panels provide a wide range of stakeholder guidance on everything from refining and prioritizing research questions for potential funding to offering feedback on the design of clinical trials to engaging patients as partners in research,” said Jean Slutsky, PA, MSPH, PCORI’s chief engagement and dissemination officer. “Our ongoing work will benefit greatly from the perspectives of this diverse group of advisory panelists.”

Selecting the panelists involved a detailed evaluation of candidates’ expertise, experience and qualifications related to their panel of interest, as well as their ability to contribute to the panel’s tasks and responsibilities. Several returning panelists have been named as chair or co-chair; Andrea Troxel for the Advisory Panel on Clinical Trials, James Frank Wharam and Nadine Barrett as co-chairs for Health Disparities and Decision Science, Thomas Scheid as chair and Gwen Darien as co-chair for the Patient Engagement Advisory Panel.
