PCORI appoints Goodman as Methodology Committee Chair, Newhouse as Vice-Chair

WASHINGTON, DC — The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors has appointed Steven Goodman, MD, MHS, PhD, as Chair of PCORI’s Methodology Committee and Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, as Vice-Chair.

Goodman, Associate Dean of Clinical and Translational Research and Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health and of Medicine at Stanford University, had served as the committee’s Vice-Chair since August 2013. Newhouse, Distinguished Professor, Indiana University and Dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing, had served as Chair since that same date, having served an earlier term as Vice-Chair. Both were first appointed to the committee when it was established in January 2011.

“On behalf of PCORI’s Board, my thanks to Drs. Goodman and Newhouse for their continued service, and my particular thanks to Dr. Goodman for his willingness to assume the Chair’s role,” said PCORI Board Chairperson Christine Goertz, DC, PhD. “Their expertise and experience will continue to be tremendous assets as the committee fulfills its mandate to develop and improve the science and methods of comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER).”

In addition to his other duties, Goodman is co-founder and co-director of the Meta-research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS), a group dedicated to examining and improving the reproducibility and efficiency of biomedical research.

“PCORI’s Methodology Committee already has done groundbreaking work to improve the science and methods of CER by developing and refining several sets of key methodology standards,” Goodman said. “I look forward to working with Dr. Newhouse and all of our Methodology Committee colleagues to continue that important effort, and to expand the scope of the committee’s activities.”

Newhouse is nationally known for her research on innovative methods to improve the quality of patient care, focusing on multisite health systems and workforce research.

“I’m delighted to serve as Vice-Chair of the Methodology Committee as we take the next steps in helping to ensure that CER is conducted to the highest standards of scientific rigor and patient-centeredness,” Newhouse said.

The Board named Goodman and Newhouse to their new roles during its September meeting.
