PCORI Awards Nearly $1.2 Million to 22 Projects through Pipeline to Proposal Program

Recipients are First Projects to Progress to the Final Stage of the Pipeline

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has awarded funds totaling nearly $1.2 million to enable 22 projects to advance into the final phase of PCORI's "Pipeline to Proposal" Awards program.

These are the first projects to have successfully progressed to the third stage of the program’s three-tier process for helping researchers, patients, and other healthcare stakeholders to develop ideas for patient-centered outcomes research into full study proposals that include robust patient engagement.

The projects will receive Tier III awards totaling up to $50,000 each to continue work they began and refined with previous Tier I and II awards. The recipients have up to 12 months to complete their proposed work during which they are required to submit it to PCORI for funding consideration or to other research funders.

The recipients include individual patients and patient groups, as well as caregivers, healthcare providers, and researchers.

Details on the projects can be found on PCORI’s website. With this latest announcement, PCORI has approved awards totaling nearly $4 million through the Pipeline program.   

“It’s gratifying to see how these projects have developed through the Pipeline to Proposal process,” said Jean Slutsky, PA, MSPH, PCORI's Chief Engagement and Dissemination Officer. “Our goal with the Pipeline program is to facilitate and nurture new partnerships that will ultimately result in a strong community of patients, researchers and other stakeholders working together to advance patient-centered outcomes research.”

PCORI’s three-tier Pipeline to Proposal Awards program begins with Tier I awards of up to $15,000 each that fund community-building and engagement projects. Tier II awards of up to $25,000 each provide funds to help recipients further strengthen their community partnerships, develop research capacity, and build the infrastructure needed to conduct research. Tier III awards support the development of high-quality, patient-centered research proposals that can be submitted to PCORI or other funders.

PCORI has also instituted a separate opportunity for research teams to apply for Tier III funding. The Independent Tier III opportunity is intended for research partnerships that have not been funded previously through the Pipeline program but that have a track record of successful research and want to enhance their patient engagement. These projects, which will also be funded for up to $50,000 have a project period of nine months. The funds enable awardees to develop patient engagement values and skills that they can incorporate into their ongoing research efforts.
