WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) today welcomed Adam Wilcox, PhD, as the newest member of its Methodology Committee.

Wilcox, medical informatics director of the Homer Warner Center for Informatics Research at Intermountain Healthcare, Salt Lake City, Utah, was named by the U.S. Comptroller General to fill an open seat on PCORI’s Methodology Committee.

Per PCORI’s authorizing law, the Methodology Committee is responsible for issuing guidance regarding the appropriate use of methods in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR). The committee’s work includes development of The PCORI Methodology Report and 47 associated standards that serve as minimal requirements for conducting scientifically sound research.

Wilcox’s expertise includes biomedical, clinical, and health informatics, particularly in the areas of comparative effectiveness research and PCOR. He leads Intermountain’s clinical decision support efforts and is directing the development of a database of research-accessible information drawn from electronic health records. Wilcox also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

“We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Wilcox to PCORI’s Methodology Committee and we look forward to learning from his expertise in the application of informatics to patient-centered outcomes research,” said Committee Chair Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, newly named Dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing. “His extensive experience in areas including decision support and optimizing the use of electronic health data for research will greatly benefit our ongoing work.”

As outlined in the law authorizing PCORI’s creation, the 17 members of the Methodology Committee represent a wide range of health and healthcare stakeholders. The legislation directs the U.S. Comptroller General, who heads the U.S. Government Accountability Office, to name up to 15 committee members. In addition, the directors of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and National Institutes of Health, or their designees, also serve on the committee.

The official announcement of Wilcox’s appointment has been published in the Federal Register. A complete list of Methodology Committee members and additional information about the committee’s work are available on PCORI’s website.
