Planning for Dissemination and Use of Results from PCORI-Funded Research
Without deliberate efforts to put knowledge gained from patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) into practice, it could be quite some time before clinicians incorporate new findings into practice or patients and caregivers use that evidence to make healthcare decisions. Therefore, as directed in our authorizing legislation, we at PCORI are planning a strong effort to encourage the healthcare community’s use of important results from the research that we fund.
We invite you to join us as we devise our plan. One of our core principles is that our work is “guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community.” That commitment, noted in our mission statement, applies to both the research we fund and our own activities.
Opportunity to Provide Input
During the next week, we will be using a crowd-sourcing tool to collect input from patients, caregivers, physicians, and nurses to advise us as we begin constructing our dissemination and implementation plan. With this tool, you can let us know how you identify useful healthcare information to help you make decisions. You can provide a new idea, vote on existing ideas, or suggest changes to existing ideas.

Building a Framework
Our goal is to develop a Dissemination and Implementation Framework to identify the ways in which the research we fund can most effectively reach and influence those who make informed healthcare decisions. This framework will guide PCORI and others in the effective dissemination of useful research findings and speed the implementation of those results.
We have contracted with Mathematica Policy Research and its partners, AcademyHealth, Palladian Partners, and WebMD, to develop our framework. It will address:
- Best practices in the dissemination and implementation of research findings
- Factors contributing to the success and failure of dissemination and implementation efforts among the diverse array of stakeholders
- Communication strategies for targeting various audiences, including PCORI’s priority populations, and evidence of effectiveness of those strategies
- Effectiveness of dissemination and implementation efforts in reducing unwarranted variation in practices and disparities in health care among different populations
- Methods for evaluating PCORI’s dissemination and implementation activities.
The First Step
As a first step to developing the framework, the team is identifying dissemination and implementation strategies, best practices, and stakeholders’ needs. Team members are undertaking a scan of the scientific literature, conducting interviews with stakeholders in different categories, analyzing the gaps in current dissemination and implementation practice, and providing case studies of dissemination and implementation.
The project team is also using the online crowd-sourcing tool mentioned above to gather input from stakeholders at various points in the project. Input gathered through this tool will appear in the final landscape review and eventually inform the framework.
The team will also engage individuals from many other stakeholder audiences to contribute to the framework. In addition, a Stakeholder Council, which includes a wide range of perspectives, is advising the team.
