Say Hello to PCORI at AcademyHealth's 2019 Annual Research Meeting

More than 3,000 medical researchers, policy experts, healthcare professionals, and students in health research will gather June 2-4 in Washington, DC, for AcademyHealth’s 2019 Annual Research Meeting (ARM). PCORI staff and awardees will be among them.

PCORI is a long-standing ARM supporter and, as in years past, is pleased that a number of our staff and awardees will be at the meeting as participants in panel discussions, oral presentations, and poster sessions on topics ranging from diabetes to health disparities and telehealth.

ARM, the premier forum for health services research, convenes each year to showcase the latest research on how the health system works, what it costs, and how to improve it. The largest meeting of its kind, ARM also provides details on cutting-edge methods and discusses the impact of health services research on policy and practice.

PCORI will host three sessions during the event:

  • Addressing Disparities through Telehealth—The healthcare system increasingly recognizes the use and practicality of telehealth approaches to improve access to and delivery of care. How can these approaches best address disparities in care? Which methods work best for which population’s preferences? This panel of PCORI-funded awardees and experts will answer those questions and present evidence on how telehealth can improve care for diverse populations. 
  • Dissemination Strategies to Promote the Use of Health Care Evidence—Three PCORI awardees will describe efforts they have undertaken collaboratively with stakeholders to identify the information and resources needed to disseminate research results, develop or expand partnerships and infrastructure for dissemination efforts, and provide relevant research results to support stakeholder uptake and implementation.
  • Deepening, Expanding, and Evolving Partnerships in Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (Engagement)—PCORI has encouraged and supported relationships between disciplines as well as patients and other stakeholders that may otherwise not have interacted in clinical research. This panel features several project participants who will discuss how these relationships originated and have evolved over time, what new types of organizations have been created, and how they affect research. 

Seven PCORI-funded researchers will discuss their study findings on consumer choice, high-need populations, methods research, and patient-centered research, in smaller ARM sessions. In addition, 21 PCORI staff and supported researchers will participate in poster sessions throughout the three-day meeting. One dozen posters will focus on patient-centered research, while other presenters will describe PCORI-funded research on behavioral health, consumer choice, and digital technologies and data.

It will be a great opportunity to stay up to date on how PCORI is working with patients, researchers, and others across the healthcare community to improve care and outcomes by funding studies comparing which care approaches work best, for whom.
